Examination of Conscience - 14

14. Have you given credit to yourself for your talent, wealth and health forgetting the authority of God?

“Do not say to yourself, “my power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this wealth.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives your power to get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors, as he is doing today.”
(Dueteronomy 8:17-18)

“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town and spend a year there doing business and making money.” Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”
(James 4:13-14)

Examination of Conscience - 13

13. Have you received the Holy Sacrament without preparation, unworthily or without faith?

“Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord. Examine yourselves and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For all who eat and drink without discerning the body eat and drink judgment against themselves. For this reasons many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. But if we judged ourselves, we would not be judged. But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.” (1Corinthians 11:27-32)

“The one who swears many oaths is full of iniquity and the scourge will not leave his house. If he swears in error his sin remains on him, and if he disregards it, he sins doubly; if he swears a false oath, he will not be justified for his house will be filled with calamities. There is a manner of speaking comparable to death; may it never be found in the inheritance of Jacob! Such conduct will be far from the Godly and they will wallow in sins.” (Sirach 23:11,12)

“And they came, everyone whose heart was stirred, and everyone whose spirit was willing, and brought the Lord’s offering to be used for the tent of meeting, and for all its service, and for the sacred vestments.” (Exodus 35:21)

“If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not postpone fulfilling it; for the Lord your God will surely require it of you, and you would incur guilt. But if you refrain from vowing, you will not incur guilt. Whatever your lips utter, you must diligently perform, just as you have freely vowed to the Lord your God with your own mouth.” (Deuteronomy 23:21-23)

“Do not accustom your mouth to oaths, not habitually utter the name of the Holy One; for as a servant who is constantly under scrutiny will not lack bruises, so also the person who always swears and utters the Name will never be cleansed from sin. The one who swears many oaths is full of iniquity, and the scourge will not leave his house. If he swears in error, his sin remains on him, and if he disregard it, he sins doubly; if he swears a false oath, he will not be justified, for his house will be filled with calamities.” (Sirach 23:9-11)

“With all you soul fear the Lord, and revere his priests, With all your might love your Maker, and do not neglect his ministers. Fear the Lord and honor the Priest, and give him his portion, as you have been commanded: The first fruits, the guilt offering, the gift of the shoulders, the sacrifice of sanctification, and the first fruits of the holy things.” (Sirach 7:29,31)

“Will anyone rob God? Yet you are robbing me! But you say, “How are we robbing you?” In your tithes and offerings! You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me the whole nation of you! Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you and overflowing blessing. I will rebuke the locust for you, so that it will not destroy the produce of your soil; and you vine in the field shall not be barren, says the Lord of hosts. “Thus says the Lord of the Host: these people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the Lords house. Now therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts: consider how you have fared, you have own much and harvested little; you Drink, but you never have enough, you eat but you never have your fill; you clothe yourselves but no one is warm, and you that earn wages to put them into a bag with holes. Thus says the Lord of hosts: consider how you fared. Go up to the hills and bring wood and built the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored, says the Lord. You have looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? Says the Lord of Hosts. Because my house lies in ruins, while all of you hurry off to your own houses. Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the soil produces, on human beings and animals, and on all their labors.” (Hagai 1:2-11)

“The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found the people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the moneychangers seated at their Tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coin of the money space changes and over turned their tables. Out of here! You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I am the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and fourth generation those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. “I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, “I Have Dreamed, I Have Dreamed”. How long will the hearts of the prophets ever turn back those who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart? They plan to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, just as their ancestors forgot my name for Baal Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let the one who has my word, speak my word faithfully. How can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental spirits? How can you want to be enslaved to them again? You are observing special days, and months, and seasons, and years. Their bows will slaughter the young men; they will have no mercy on the fruit of the womb; their eyes will not pity children. And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the splendor and pride of the chaldeans, will be like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them. It will never be inhabited or lived in for all generations; Arabs will not pitch their tents there, shepherds will not make their flocks lie down there. Take care, or you will be seduced in to turning away, serving other gods and worshiping them, for then the anger of the lord will be kindled against you and he will shut up the heavens, so that there will be no rain and the land will yield no fruit; then you will perish quickly off the good land that the Lord is giving you.” (Deuteronomy 11: 13- 17)
